Self Portrait

Started a self portrait before the semester started. I haven't really done one in a really long time. I have only recently developed the ability to capture likenesses succesfully in my painting so it is really interesting to see myself staring (well not really staring since my eyes are closed) back at me.

This is only a section of the painting and it still has much to go. I am really looking forward to it coming closer and closer to completion. Until then!

Coffee Shop Savior

I decided to post a little bit of work in progress for my current assignment. We had to do a poster on a subject we felt strongly about. Basically the project tested our ability to communicate a message with images alone without the use of text. As you can see, I have a very high opinion of coffee and those who serve it.

I started the assignment with an oil painting on 300 lb watercolor paper, which I had printed my final drawing on and sealed with matte medium. The water color was a bit pricey, but it had the advantage of being flexible enough to be run through my printer, while being heavy enough to not buckle when I started painting with oils. It is still taking a lot of experimenting to figure out what surfaces work best for me. Most likely I will be using something entirely different tomorrow.

Anyways, after I got the figure and the central background painted up and scanned in I began shaping it even further digitally as well and adding in the additional design elements of stained glass. Still have a lot to do on it digitally, but it has been an enjoyable learning experience.

Experimenting

Haven't been posting much due to lack of internet. Lately I have been doing some experimenting with combinations of oils and digital. It is always easier to solve my basic illustrative problems in oils, but the possibilities with digital media after the fact are endless. It is so easy to drop an mage in an play with it for hours at a time.

The first of these two images was just a quick monotone oil sketch. It is always easier to just deal with one pigment along with white when practicing defining form in oils. After getting all the drawing in it is super easy to adjust the image with a combination of selective color and color layers. My favorite part is in the end having the original painting as well as a completely new piece in the end. Plus after all the digital work is done, I can just print it out and do even more work on it by hand with either pens or more paint. The possibilities are endless!
